Love Poem Project

Every year, at his school, Dylan has this special project for mother’s day. Like always, he tried to keep it under wrap until d-day but mostly, weeks before that, he ended up telling me about his project. This year it’s a little bit different, it seemed like he manage to keep tight-lipped about the detail. Whenever I mentioned about mother’s day, he always looked at me with mysterious smile and quickly went to his dad and whispered something to him. :D

I finally found out on the mother’s day morning that the project was a “mom love poem” (by Dylan) including handmade flowers in a handmade vase. So cute! Even better, Emil completed that morning by preparing me breakfast.

Receiving all the attentions at mother’s day made me think about my mom, I hardly ever gave her a present or any special treat at mother’s day. However, it does not mean I love her any less and I believe she knows that too. :)

Anyway, the love poem will now be directly taped on my dressing table wall, together with last year mother’s day’s project. Thank you son!

And last but not least… “Happy Mother’s Day, Ma!”

Little late, but Happy New Year!

No resolution for this year, just hope.. this year will be better than the last. :)

Crave Food

And… the cooking demo continues!
This time, we’re making Indonesian Sweet Pancake (Martabak Manis), one of my favorite snacks. For this demo, I invited some of my friends to cook, share and enjoy the food with me. This demo event gave us a chance to have a small feast with my friends bringing other food to complement the martabak. So here is the recipe, go try and enjoy it.

Ingredients for pancake:
250 gr (2 cups) flour
1 teaspoon instant yeast
150 gr (2/3 cup) white sugar
375 ml (1,5 cups) warm milk
2 eggs
¼ teaspoon baking soda

Filling as desired:
Peanuts, roasted, peeled, chopped
Sesame seeds, toasted
Granulated sugar
Chocolate sprinkle
Grated Cheese
Sweetened condensed milk

Cooking directions:

1. Mix flour and sugar.

2. Mix yeast with warm milk, stir well. Add into the flour mixture and stir until well combined.

3. Add the eggs one by one while stirring continuously until well combined.

4. Close the mixture and put it in warm place for about 1 hour until it is bubbling on top.

5. Heat a Teflon skillet (20 cm diameter) with low heat, grease the skillet with margarine.

6. Pour 1 cup of the mixture to the skillet, wait until the mixture hot and bubbly.

7. Put on the lid, cook for about 10 minutes or until the top full with holes and dry.

8. Take out from the skillets and put onto flat surface, grease the top with some margarine.

9. Sprinkle with chocolate, shredded cheese and sweet condensed milk.

10. Fold into half circle, spread the outside skin with margarine again and cut into 8 pieces.

Guilty Pleasure

It’s so hard not to get lost watching them in Playful Kiss .. :)

One year older!

I just uploaded some pictures to my online album and suddenly realized that I was not as productive as two years ago or even last year in taking pictures. I used to capture Dylan’s milestones since he was a baby. Well, maybe I am getting older and became lazy or because Dylan is getting bigger and does not want me to take a picture of him anymore. Either way, my online album started to run short of new collection.

DSC_0127.jpgAbout Dylan, starting last week he became a member of Children Theatre of Madison. I remembered a couple of weeks ago we argued which program he should join, youth basketball league or children theatre. In the end, he convinced us that fall class at children theatre is the best one for him. Better than basketball which already made his head hurt once because someone in his class accidentally struck his head with a ball. Actually, physical education has never been his favorite subject. He must have taken it from his dad :) since PE was always my favorite at school.

However, no matter what he chooses, I hope we could continue to support him.

Happy birthday Dylan!

Lake Geneva, WI

Happy New Year!

It’s been a while since my last post. My writing class last fall, Dylan’s first semester at school, my part time job, household works, and preparation for winter season has all kept me busy lately. But, I am planning to resume the entire story from the last six months for our memories. Just like this one.

This is a picture I took last summer when we visit Lake Geneva, WI. I called the visit “our bonus vacation” after we came back from Memphis, TN two days earlier. I remembered my friend once mention about this place while we were on the way to Gurnee, IL. She told me that the lake there was very beautiful and reminded her of the real Lake Geneva in Switzerland. So here I was five years later finally have a chance to visit this place. I have never been to Switzerland before, but I agree with her that the lake was beautiful and had a great view.

Happy 5th birthday Dylan!
We can’t believe it’s been 5 years already!
It’s the happiest 5 years of our life.

American Risoles

A couple of weeks ago, I asked my friend (Thanks Ayu! :) )to come by to my place to show me some tips and tricks how to make risoles (Indonesian savory eggrolls). It was not as hard as I thought it will be but it sure took a lot of time. As a first time risoles maker, I tried the easiest filler that my friend told me. Let me share the recipe here so next time I feel like making it, all I have to do is take a peek at the recipe here.

American Risoles

IMG_0933IMG_0926IMG_0930

Ingredients
Wrapper/ crepes:

100 g all purpose flour (3/4 cup)
1 teaspoon salt
3 eggs
300 ml milk (1 1/5 cups)
75 g butter/ margarine, melted (5 Tbs)

Filling:
Smoked beef, thin slice
Cheese, slice
Boiled egg, slice
Mayonnaise+sweetened condensed milk
(4 Tbs : 1 Tbs)

Dipping:
Breadcrumbs
1 egg, beaten

Directions:
Wrapper/ crepes:

In the bowl, combine flour, salt & egg. Start to whisk it in one direction.
Gradually add milk, keep whisking the mixture to create a smooth texture.
Add the melted butter, keep whisking.
Close the mixture with plastic wrap, set aside for 30 minutes.
Heat up a non-stick pan, spread with butter/margarine.
Take about ¼ cup of the mixture, pour it to the pan and spread it to produce a thin crepe.
Keep doing this until the mixture is done.
Make about 15 crepes.

Filling:
Lay out one risoles wrapper with a corner pointed toward you, then spread with mayo mixture. Place smoked beef, cheese and boiled eggs and fold corner up over the mixture. Fold left and right corners toward the center and continue to roll. Spread again with mayo mixture on the final corner to help seal the risoles.

Dipping:
Dip the risoles into beaten egg then coat them with bread crumbs. Fry them with low heat, set aside and use the tissue paper to absorb the oil.

Serve with chili sauce.

16 hours at Memphis

After going through several options, for this year’s summer vacation we decided to go to Memphis, TN. This time we will travel by train. It was also more convenient for Emil since he didn’t have to drive and therefore can enjoy the trip without worrying about traffic and parking. We were going to have a lot of fun!

This train trip is actually my idea. I thought it would be fun to see the view during the ride (even though, in reality we don’t always get what we want because we ended up traveling at night). In the beginning, we only wanted to go somewhere close, like Chicago, St Louis or Indiana but somehow the plan evolved until we finally chose to go to Tennessee, a 14-hour trip from Madison (including the bus trip from Madison to Chicago). The good thing is we could rent a family bedroom in the train while it wasn’t acceptable for a short (less than 8 hours) trip.

Emil queued at the counter

Emil queued at the counter

The vacation began at Thursday afternoon. We took a bus to Memorial Union to catch our 2.30 pm bus to Chicago. Dylan found this interesting, since he didn’t have to sit on the car seat and ride with so many people on the bus. Btw, this was his first time to ride a bus and later… the train. We arrived at Chicago Union Station at 7.30 pm, an hour late from schedule because of the traffic. Almost as soon as we arrived Emil started queuing at the counter to try to get a room for us. It was a long line. The reason for this is when Emil made a reservation for the round trip ticket online he could not get a room for the Chicago – Memphis section because all of the family bedrooms were sold out. They did have a smaller room but since we’re a family of three, the room was too small for us. We’re lucky enough to get a room on the way back but still wanted to push our luck by trying to buy the room to Memphis directly at the counter station. Unfortunately, all the train room to Memphis was sold out except the big bedroom, which costs an additional $376. Because of this, we decided to just use our reserved coach seats which turn out very comfortable with wide space and leg rest.

We arrived in Memphis at 6.27 am. Dylan was so amazed and kept asking about how we are suddenly at Memphis while he didn’t recognize anything (well, probably because he was asleep all the way there! Later this will be one of his five favorite things on this trip :D ). After we cleaned up, we left our luggage at the Amtrak passenger service (our train back to Madison would be at 10.30 pm that night) and had breakfast at a restaurant just across the street… let the adventure begin!

We bought a Memphis trolley day pass for our transportation while we’re there (Dylan got the pass for free!) and ride along the Main Street to discover the city before taking the city tours. Our first tour started at 10.15 am, we went sightseeing all over the city, from the Peabody hotel to Graceland. It was an enjoyable tour. We stopped by at the Peabody hotel to watch the duck show, took pictures with Elvis & BB Kings statues, had lunch in Beale Street and played at FedEx Forum front yard. The tour ended at two o’clock. After that the bus dropped us at the Beale Street, a place where we will take the next tour. While waiting, we had snacks at Blues Café. Our next tour, The Memphis Mojo Tour was very unique because the tour guide was one of the talented Memphis musicians who told us historical events about Memphis while singing for us. As we expected, Dylan really enjoyed this one. He was more than happy to sing and shake the shaker to go along through the song with the entire tour audiences. Our tour guide musician, Memphis Jones was a funny man and a good singer! We loved it.

The tour ended at 5.00 pm. At that time, we still had at least four and a half hours more to explore the city. On the way to Main Street to catch the trolley, we stopped by at Starbucks and stayed there for a while. After that, we took a different trolley route to sightsee the Mississippi river and Memphis Arkansas Bridge from the trolley. I wish we could stop by at the river park but we were so hungry and we also needed to go to the souvenir shop. It was almost 9 o’clock when we finished our dinner at Wang Chinese bistro (the food was delicious!). Well, I guess it’s time to go back to the station, pick up our luggage and wait until the train comes. We’re finally on board the train at 11 o’clock. We were so tired but still managed to clean up first before we finally go straight to bed. I even had a chance to take a shower (Emil & Dylan decided to take a shower in the morning).

I woke up in the morning while the attendant announced the last call for passengers to get a breakfast at the dining cars. I ordered us a breakfast and brought some back to our bedroom. Somehow, the waiter forgot to make a scramble egg that I ordered for Emil and made the hash brown instead. We arrived at Chicago Union Station at 10 am to catch the 11 o’clock bus to Memorial Union. We finally arrived home at 4 pm, Saturday, after we had a snack and ice cream in Union Terrace. It was a great trip. We’ll definitely do it again someday.
