Happy Mother’s day to all the Moms out there!
Happy New Year!
It’s been a while since my last post. My writing class last fall, Dylan’s first semester at school, my part time job, household works, and preparation for winter season has all kept me busy lately. But, I am planning to resume the entire story from the last six months for our memories. Just like this one.
This is a picture I took last summer when we visit Lake Geneva, WI. I called the visit “our bonus vacation” after we came back from Memphis, TN two days earlier. I remembered my friend once mention about this place while we were on the way to Gurnee, IL. She told me that the lake there was very beautiful and reminded her of the real Lake Geneva in Switzerland. So here I was five years later finally have a chance to visit this place. I have never been to Switzerland before, but I agree with her that the lake was beautiful and had a great view.
Happy 5th birthday Dylan!
We can’t believe it’s been 5 years already!
It’s the happiest 5 years of our life.

Mom & Dad
A couple of weeks ago, I asked my friend (Thanks Ayu!
)to come by to my place to show me some tips and tricks how to make risoles (Indonesian savory eggrolls). It was not as hard as I thought it will be but it sure took a lot of time. As a first time risoles maker, I tried the easiest filler that my friend told me. Let me share the recipe here so next time I feel like making it, all I have to do is take a peek at the recipe here.
American Risoles

Ingredients
Wrapper/ crepes:
100 g all purpose flour
1 teaspoon salt
3 eggs
300 ml milk
75 g butter/ margarine, melted
Filling:
Smoked beef, thin slice
Cheese, slice
Boiled egg, slice
Mayonnaise+sweetened condensed milk
(4 Tbs : 1 Tbs)
Dipping:
Breadcrumbs
1 egg, beaten
Directions:
Wrapper/ crepes:
In the bowl, combine flour, salt & egg. Start to whisk it in one direction.
Gradually add milk, keep whisking the mixture to create a smooth texture.
Add the melted butter, keep whisking.
Close the mixture with plastic wrap, set aside for 30 minutes.
Heat up a non-stick pan, spread with butter/margarine.
Take about ¼ cup of the mixture, pour it to the pan and spread it to produce a thin crepe.
Keep doing this until the mixture is done.
Make about 15 crepes.
Filling:
Lay out one risoles wrapper with a corner pointed toward you, then spread with mayo mixture. Place smoked beef, cheese and boiled eggs and fold corner up over the mixture. Fold left and right corners toward the center and continue to roll. Spread again with mayo mixture on the final corner to help seal the risoles.
Dipping:
Dip the risoles into beaten egg then coat them with bread crumbs. Fry them with low heat, set aside and use the tissue paper to absorb the oil.
Serve with chili sauce.
After going through several options, for this year’s summer vacation we decided to go to Memphis, TN. This time we will travel by train. It was also more convenient for Emil since he didn’t have to drive and therefore can enjoy the trip without worrying about traffic and parking. We were going to have a lot of fun!
This train trip is actually my idea. I thought it would be fun to see the view during the ride (even though, in reality we don’t always get what we want because we ended up traveling at night). In the beginning, we only wanted to go somewhere close, like Chicago, St Louis or Indiana but somehow the plan evolved until we finally chose to go to Tennessee, a 14-hour trip from Madison (including the bus trip from Madison to Chicago). The good thing is we could rent a family bedroom in the train while it wasn’t acceptable for a short (less than 8 hours) trip.

On the way to M.Union

Emil queued at the counter
The vacation began at Thursday afternoon. We took a bus to Memorial Union to catch our 2.30 pm bus to Chicago. Dylan found this interesting, since he didn’t have to sit on the car seat and ride with so many people on the bus. Btw, this was his first time to ride a bus and later… the train. We arrived at Chicago Union Station at 7.30 pm, an hour late from schedule because of the traffic. Almost as soon as we arrived Emil started queuing at the counter to try to get a room for us. It was a long line. The reason for this is when Emil made a reservation for the round trip ticket online he could not get a room for the Chicago – Memphis section because all of the family bedrooms were sold out. They did have a smaller room but since we’re a family of three, the room was too small for us. We’re lucky enough to get a room on the way back but still wanted to push our luck by trying to buy the room to Memphis directly at the counter station. Unfortunately, all the train room to Memphis was sold out except the big bedroom, which costs an additional $376. Because of this, we decided to just use our reserved coach seats which turn out very comfortable with wide space and leg rest.
We arrived in Memphis at 6.27 am. Dylan was so amazed and kept asking about how we are suddenly at Memphis while he didn’t recognize anything (well, probably because he was asleep all the way there! Later this will be one of his five favorite things on this trip
). After we cleaned up, we left our luggage at the Amtrak passenger service (our train back to Madison would be at 10.30 pm that night) and had breakfast at a restaurant just across the street… let the adventure begin!

Memphis Jones from The Memphis Mojo tour

Beale Street

Memphis trolley
We bought a Memphis trolley day pass for our transportation while we’re there (Dylan got the pass for free!) and ride along the Main Street to discover the city before taking the city tours. Our first tour started at 10.15 am, we went sightseeing all over the city, from the Peabody hotel to Graceland. It was an enjoyable tour. We stopped by at the Peabody hotel to watch the duck show, took pictures with Elvis & BB Kings statues, had lunch in Beale Street and played at FedEx Forum front yard. The tour ended at two o’clock. After that the bus dropped us at the Beale Street, a place where we will take the next tour. While waiting, we had snacks at Blues Café. Our next tour, The Memphis Mojo Tour was very unique because the tour guide was one of the talented Memphis musicians who told us historical events about Memphis while singing for us. As we expected, Dylan really enjoyed this one. He was more than happy to sing and shake the shaker to go along through the song with the entire tour audiences. Our tour guide musician, Memphis Jones was a funny man and a good singer! We loved it.

Memphis Arkansas Bridge
The tour ended at 5.00 pm. At that time, we still had at least four and a half hours more to explore the city. On the way to Main Street to catch the trolley, we stopped by at Starbucks and stayed there for a while. After that, we took a different trolley route to sightsee the Mississippi river and Memphis Arkansas Bridge from the trolley. I wish we could stop by at the river park but we were so hungry and we also needed to go to the souvenir shop. It was almost 9 o’clock when we finished our dinner at Wang Chinese bistro (the food was delicious!). Well, I guess it’s time to go back to the station, pick up our luggage and wait until the train comes. We’re finally on board the train at 11 o’clock. We were so tired but still managed to clean up first before we finally go straight to bed. I even had a chance to take a shower (Emil & Dylan decided to take a shower in the morning).

Our room

Arrived at Chicago

Chicago Union Station
I woke up in the morning while the attendant announced the last call for passengers to get a breakfast at the dining cars. I ordered us a breakfast and brought some back to our bedroom. Somehow, the waiter forgot to make a scramble egg that I ordered for Emil and made the hash brown instead. We arrived at Chicago Union Station at 10 am to catch the 11 o’clock bus to Memorial Union. We finally arrived home at 4 pm, Saturday, after we had a snack and ice cream in Union Terrace. It was a great trip. We’ll definitely do it again someday.
There is a lot to be thankful for today..

I found these Indonesia traditional crackers (krupuk kampung) at my local Asian food store. It brought back so many memories from my hometown in Jakarta, I even planned the food that I will cook with it…
Here they are… all of these foods were cooked because of these krupuk…

Vegetable Salad

Krupuk Kampung (Indonesia traditional crakers)
I still remember that day; Dylan woke up with a smile on his face. He looks so cute. I asked him to give me a morning hug. When I reminded him about his recital that day, he only said “I know…” He didn’t look so excited and went outside toward the living room. I watched him from behind and waited a bit until he finally ran back to me and said “I’m so excited…!” and then we laughed together… I knew he tried to tease me and pretended he doesn’t care about the recital; he did the same kind of joke all the time. You’re not going to fool me this time Dylan…
Since the recital will start at 12.00 pm and Dylan was going to be the first student to play, we could not afford to be late. The recital took place at Oakwood Village which is only about five minutes from our apartment. On the way there, I just found out from the invitation letter that we’ve been suggested to bring a food to share for the reception. Oh no, it’s already 11.45 am, there’s no way we could stop by at any place that time. Well, I guess next time I should more careful and read the invitation! (Later on, we had to skip the reception because Emil had another plan after that, not because we forgot to bring the food…
)
We arrived 10 minutes early, the other participants started to show not long after that. According to the order of events, there will be 25 participants in this recital, including the teachers (Dylan will be the youngest participant here!). They’re going to recite either for piano, violin or guitar.
They started the recital with Mr. Brian (Dylan’s teacher) playing Pie Jesu. Dylan was so excited and could not wait to play. He started to stand up as soon as Mr. Brian finished his song. I told him to wait until his name was called. Finally, Mr. Brian called his name and Dylan walked forward with full confidence. He played two song, first: The Wild Colt (duet with his teacher: Mr. Brian), second: The Haunted Mouse (he played this song solo). At the first song, it seems like he really enjoyed the play and even nodded along to the song. Same thing with the second song, he played it with enjoyment. Although he did miss a couple of notes, I think Dylan did a really good job. On the other hand, I am so amazed with his confidence in front of the audience. I wish I had half of it! Bravo Dylan, we’re so proud of you!
Another potluck party! This time with Emil’s friends from work. At first we wanted to set up a BBQ party at our apartment building’s backyard, but the weather was very bad that day. It’s raining and cold; the weather forecast even said that there’s going to be thunderstorm that evening. However, the party must go on… so we decided to move the party to our apartment.

The foods

The people
At six o’clock, the guests started to arrive with their foods. As a host, we prepared Indonesian traditional chicken noodle with chicken semur and fried wonton stuffed + rice. While others brought their specialty food like chicken with curry spices (Mamata & Niraj), shrimp stir-fry and green beans (Kanisa & Pat), Sweet coconut rice ball/ klepon (Dadit & fam) and our main food for this party, Bulgogi & noodle salad (MK & Fam). Everything was so yummy! Dylan couldn’t get enough of bulgogi, after he finished eating it with rice he still wants it more and more. Next time I should ask the recipe from MK… We’re having so much fun that night. Even the kids enjoyed playing in Dylan’s bedroom even though the space is very limited.
It was almost ten o’clock when the last guests leave from our place. Hopefully we will have the real BBQ party before the summer’s gone. For me, although the party didn’t turn out as we planned but it’s still a great party. Good times, good people, good food! What else can you ask for?

Just want to share a picture from my last day of summer class.
By the end of the class session we always had a small farewell party. Since it was a potluck, everyone had to bring some food to share. I decided to bring curry fried rice to the party. Alongside that there were Korean, Japanese, Italian, Mexican and Brazil food too. All the foods were super delicious. This time, Kelly (the teacher) even brought a movie to watch with the entire class. Everybody really enjoyed the movie and foods.
From the last two classes I took, this is the most fun class I have taken so far. All the students were friendly and funny. Farewell guys! See you next time…
